Back to Meetings and other activities

After a break of 18 months, because of Covid, we resumed our meetings on 6  August, with a very good presentation on  ‘Sussex Castles’, with John Bleach (report in our Members’ pages). This was followed on 3 September by an excellent  presentation on ‘RAF Tangmere and the Tangmere Museum’ by Sqn Ldr Joe Marsden (report to follow in Members’ pages).

We then have Tim Baldwin  on 5 November, giving a presentation on ‘Sussex and Painters’. Our final meeting of 2021 will be on 10 December – the entertaining Trevor Povey on ‘Brighton – from Fishing Village to Railway Town’. This will be in our normal meeting style – there will be no Christmas social this year.

Non-members are always welcome for a £3 admission charge, which will be refunded if a subscription is taken out (£10 p.a single, £15 for a couple). Subscribers receive our Magazine and can ask for a password to access the ‘Extra Pages’ on this web site. These now include a digital second edition of the book ‘The Day before Yesterday – Ferring in the 20th Century’.

We  arranged a visit to Tangmere Military Aviation Museum on 14 September, as a follow-up to the 3 September talk, and our next excursion is a guided walk around old Angmering on 8 October. We also encourage members to go on one of the Broadwater Cemetery tours. These are usually held on the first Saturday of the month, meeting at 11 am at the main entrance in South Farm Road (BN14 7TP), The cemetery had been disused for many decades and is full of stories about the interesting people who were buried there.  The 2 October tour is about the inhabitants of Liverpool Terrace, the Georgian houses in the town centre.

On  8 October we enjoyed a very interesting guided walk around old Angmering, with local historian Neil Rogers-Davis. Angmering has three times as many listed buildings as Ferring, many of them in the High Street and Church Road. There is a great deal of information on Neil’s village history web site – http://www.angmeringvillage.co.uk/history/anghist.htm

We hope to see you at one of our meetings, walks or visits.

We expect to run a full programme of meetings, visits and talks in 2022,
