The Ilex Avenue was originally the driveway to Goring Hall. At the Ferring end, there was a large pair of wrought iron gates, with rails extending about 10m either side :
Once inside the gates, to the left was the gate house, known as “West Lodge”. The gates and railings were removed during WW2 for scrap to assist the war effort. Stubs can still be seen in the ground today, just inside the entrance to the Ilex.
